As they turned\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">the corner by the Eastern end of the refinery area, they ran\u00a0 into\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">an ambush which concentrated heavy fire on both vehicles. Fire\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">came from a building in the refinery and from a grove of palm\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">trees on the other\u00a0 ide of the road. Both vehicles were forced into\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">the ditch by the intense fire. The occupants of the car were thrown\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">outside the vehicle. The driver of the\u00a0 orry dismounted with his\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">weapon and lying on the ground, returned the fire of the attackers.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">After a few minutes, a civilian car approached from\u00a0 the East, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">the Warrant Officer commandeering it was able to escape with the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Corporal. They returned with a party of Bren-gun carriers which,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">on\u00a0 approaching the scene of the ambush, came under heavy fire\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">from both sides of the road. Under fire they were able to rescue\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">the bodies of five\u00a0 Mauritian Soldiers from the lorry.<\/span><\/p><p>The following day early in the morning, a party of troops was sent\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">again to the scene of the ambush and on making a thorough search\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">of the area,\u00a0 found the bodies of the remaining three Mauritian\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">soldiers and of the British soldier who had been in the car. The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">body of the British Major was\u00a0 delivered to the British hospital by\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">an Egyptian Police officer.<\/span><\/p><p>It appears from the Post Mortem report that the eight Mauritian\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">soldiers and the British soldier were killed by gunshot, but there\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">is evidence also that their bodies were \u201cmutilated \u201c after death\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">by being struck all over by a \u201cblunt\u201d instrument and by stabbing.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The Actual Post Mortem\/ Autopsy report #61\/.. (FO&#8230;\/96&#8230;) was\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">performed by Lt Col R. V&#8230; (RAMC) Specialist in pathology. This\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">report was far too brutal to be fully reported. The only serviceman\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">who was taken prisoner by these Auxilliaries and lived to tell the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">tale of his harrowing experience was LAC Tony Rigden who after\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">a long time in captivity ended up being thrown out of a taxi onto\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">the streets of Paris, and from there made his own way home. A squadron\u00a0of the Mauritius Territorial Force guarded Port Louis harbour. 70\u00a0men from the German marines were captured and imprisoned.\u00a0They disembarked the ships and were escorted by the Mauritian\u00a0Territorial guards. They were transported to Rose Hill where a camp\u00a0was improvised for them. The camp was protected by a wall made\u00a0of stone several meters tall. Inside, a well-organised discipline was\u00a0observed. Daily programs were planned for the soldiers such as\u00a0sports, physical training exercise, games, choir singing and so on.\u00a0Everyday one group of prisoners were escorted by the Mauritian\u00a0soldiers and headed for the playground of the college of Agriculture\u00a0at Reduit, where they trained and played handball.<\/p><p>Mauritian soldiers guarded the camp, but they stayed only at the\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">peak of the walls, operating on a shift system, switching from the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">barracks at Vacoas to Rose Hill. Communication with prisoners was\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">limited and difficult due to the language barrier or due to language\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">barriers. Medications and cigarettes were smuggled inside and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">some soldiers had the chance to communicate with the Lieutenant,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Emil Dehnel the group leader. Known as a courteous and reserved\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">person, Dehnel maintained the high spirit morale among his men.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">He also communicated information to them about a German\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">battleship, the Bismarck, accompanied by the Prinz Eugen, which\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">sunk the British vessel, HMS Hood. His men were happy and sung\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">loudly in the hope that their mates would rescue them, but their joy\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">was short-lived as the Bismarck ship found itself rudder stuck and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">sunk. After a month of imprisonment, they packed their belongings\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">and boarded the Hatarna ship, guarded by the Mauritian soldiers.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">They were heading for Mombasa. Built by Blohm\u00a0and Voss, the battleship mounted a main battery of eight 15\u201d guns\u00a0and was capable of a top speed of over 30 knots.\u00a0\u00a0Quickly identified\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">as a threat by the Royal Navy, efforts to track Bismarck were\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">underway after its commissioning in August 1940. Ordered on its\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">first mission into the Atlantic the following year, Bismarck won a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">victory over HMS Hood at the Battle of the Denmark Strait, but\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">soon came under a combined attack by British ships and aircraft.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Damaged by an aerial torpedo, Bismarck was sunk by British surface\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">ships on May 27, 1941.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element In\u00a0September 1940, the Atlantic, Milos, and Pacific,\u00a0picked up 3,600 Jews from Vienna, Gda\u0144sk\u00a0and Prague in Tulcea, Romania, to be sent to\u00a0Palestine. Jews that arrived in Palestine came without entry permits and were subsequently\u00a0denied entry by the British government. The\u00a0British decided to deport the immigrants to\u00a0either Trinidad and Tobago or Mauritius, both British\u00a0colonies. On 25 November 1940, the first ship carrying the\u00a01,800 Jews to Mauritius, the Patria, was accidentally bombed by the\u00a0Haganah, who wanted the Jews to stay in Palestine. Their intentions\u00a0were to cripple the ship. There were 260 fatalities and 172 injuries.\u00a0There were only enough lifeboats for 805. The surviving Jews were\u00a0sent to Atlit detainee camp in Israel. The remaining 1,584 refugees\u00a0from the Atlantic who were not on the Patria were initially also\u00a0imprisoned in Atlit, and were sent to Mauritius on 9 December,\u00a01940. On reaching Mauritius, they were sent to a detainment camp\u00a0in Beau-Bassin.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-22d92c3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"22d92c3\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-background-overlay\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f78480a\" data-id=\"f78480a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-712e308 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"712e308\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In the camp, the detainees suffered from tropical diseases and\u00a0inadequate food and clothing. Jewish organizations such as the\u00a0South African Jewish Board of Deputies, the Jewish Agency, and\u00a0the Zionist Federation, sent food, clothing, medicine, and religious\u00a0items to the detainees. Initially, a ban on interaction between the\u00a0sexes was enforced; the men were held in a former jailhouse and the\u00a0women in adjacent iron huts. After the ban was lifted, 60 children\u00a0were born in the camp. In total, 128 prisoners died in the camp,\u00a0and were buried in the Jewish section of St. Martin Cemetery.\u00a0At the end of World War II, the detainees were given the choice\u00a0of returning to their former homes in Europe or immigrating to\u00a0Palestine. Most chose Palestine, and on August 6, 1945, 1,320 landed\u00a0in Haifa. According to the population census of 2011, there are 43\u00a0Jews in Mauritius.<\/p><p>Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships that were\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">ordered for the Kriegsmarine in the years prior to World War II.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Built by Blohm and Voss, the battleship mounted a main battery\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">of eight 15\u201d guns and was capable of a top speed of over 30\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">knots. Quickly identified as a threat by the Royal Navy, efforts to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">track Bismarck were underway after its commissioning in August\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">1940. Ordered on its first mission into the Atlantic the following\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">year, Bismarck won a victory over HMS Hood at the Battle of the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Denmark Strait, but soon came under a combined attack by British\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">ships\u00a0 and aircraft.
