International Museum day is celebrated every year on 18 May to improve public awareness on the role of museums in the development of Society. This year’s theme, Museums and Cultural Landscapes highlights the responsibility of museums not only to their collections, but also to their environment, including the cities, villages and communities to which they belong, and calls on them to promote and communicate about their own collections and the cultural and natural heritage around them, to celebrate the complex link between people and their environment.
In this context, the Mauritius Museums Council mounted an Exhibition on ” Lap\u00e9rouse – Navigateur des Lumi\u00e8re, which was inaugurated by Hon. S.Baboo, Minister of Arts and Culture on Wednesday 18 May 2016 at the National History Museum at Mahebourg and also organised two painting competitions for secondary students on the theme:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1- Historical Mahebourg
2- Old Building\/Colonial Houses in Port Louis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Prize Giving Ceremony was held at the National History Museum, Mahebourg on Wednesday 18 May 2016. and 30 best paintings are being displayed at the Museum.

The winners of the competitions were awarded prizes by Hon. S. Baboo, Hon. T. Henry, Hon. B. Hurreeram, H.E. Susan Coles, Australian High Commissioner and Mr. Bernard S.C Li Kwong Ken, Chairman of Mauritius Museums Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
